  • Arrowhead Subdivision
    City of Mebane, North Carolina

Designed 2006-2007 in the City of Mebane, just north of I-85/40 off of Mebane Oaks Road for Stokes Land Group. Construction started in 2007 and continuing.

Multi-phase site with 212 Acres of Mixed Use (Residential-Arrowhead Greens Subdivision, Multi Family- Carden Apartments (by others), Commercial/Retail- Tanger Outlets (by Others), Medical- Alamance Regional Medical Park (by Others)).

Streams, wetlands, and water quality issues were a tremendous first obstacle with the development. There were three ponds and three streams wandering thought the site. There are 3 stream crossings and a 110 Foot long Conspan bridge was installed to avoid exceeding the 150 Linear Foot limit on the removal of perennial streams. Also, all three ponds were submitted for hazard classification with one pond being permitted for breaching because of it's high hazard classification.

The Erosion Control plan consisted of 10 phases because of the complexity engendered by the three streams.

Four wet detention basins were constructed to treat storm water runoff from the site.

Civil Construction cost total - $6,000,000

  • Carter School/Career Center Complex
    Winston Salem, Forsyth County Schools

    General

In September of 2009, Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools began construction on the Carter School site on Highland Avenue in central Winston Salem. The Carter School site is approximately 15 acres on the site of the existing Kennedy Middle School.

The first phase of the project includes the Carter Special Education High School. The next phase will include the Vocational Career Center and Career Tech Buildings. Following construction of all phases two-hundred thousand square feet of classroom space will have been constructed on the site, along with required parking and drives.

     Stormwater Management

The project will also include development of an adjacent offsite area for parking. The project will increase the built upon area on the site from 20% to 60%. The City of Winston Salem post-construction stormwater ordinance requires detention of the increase in runoff volumes following development. It also requires stormwater treatment for new built upon area.

DMP developed a system of underground sand filters and storm water detention devices to best utilize the limited space availabe on the Carter School Site.

The Carter School Stormwater system has the following design characteristics:

    • Area Treated - 21.66 Acres
    • Pre-Development Built Upon Area - 20%
    • Post-Development Built Upon Area - 60%
    • Detention Volume Provided - 80,000 Cubic Feet
    • Sandfilter Surface Area - 3000 Square Feet
    • Construction Cost - $1.8 Million

  • Deep River Pump Station
    City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina

    Planning

In 1997, Davis-Martin-Powell was selected to perform a wastewater Planning Study for the City of Winston-Salem. The goal of this study was to analyze existing sewer infrastructure in the Deep River and Abbotts Creek sub-basins and develop a 25-year plan to provide for future growth.

This Study evolved into a 201 Facilities Plan Amendment and Environmental Assessment. The Town of Kernersville was then able to obtain $7.5 million in low-interest loan funds for their portion of the $10.4 million project cost.

    Final Design

In 2002, the City of Winston-Salem selected DMP to prepare construction documents to relocate the existing Deep River Pump Station. The location of the relocated pump station was chosen to provide service to an area bordered by Interstate 40, Highway 66 and the Guilford County Line, based on the sewer Master Plan developed by DMP.

The new Deep River Pump Station is a duplex submersible design, with a firm capacity of 1,250 gpm (1.8 MGD). The station was designed with variable frequency drives (VFD’s) and ultrasonic level sensor to provide the City with the capability of handling existing flow conditions and higher future flow conditions. Site topography and proximity to an existing stream (falling within the Randleman Buffer Rules) dictated creativity in design, including extensive erosion controls, an access drive with a large box culvert, and a segmental retaining wall. The line work included 7,600 LF of 12” forcemain, 4,000 LF of 8” gravity sewer, and approximately 13,600 LF of 12”-18” gravity outfall.

This $2,800,000 project was bid and constructed as part of a State Revolving Loan Fund project between the State, the Town of Kernersville and the City of Winston-Salem. The new Deep River Pump Station, forcemain, and accompanying three (3) outfalls were completed and placed into service in Summer 2005.

  • Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation
    Piedmont Centre Distribution Facility Expansion

Polo’s worldwide distribution facility occupies 69.5 acres in High Point, North Carolina. The 389,000 square foot expansion involved approximately 25 acres of that property, with a civil construction cost of approximately $3,000,000. New and reconfigured parking areas comprised approximately 6 acres.

Wetland and water quality issues were a tremendous first obstacle with the expansion and we had to make presentation to the State of North Carolina Environmental Management Commission in order to exceed the 150 LF limit on removal of perennial stream. Mitigation involved a DWQ-quality wet detention pond. We were successful and received project approval from EMC at our first hearing.

Subsequent projects in 2001 and 2002 included design, permitting, construction administration, and management of a permanent access road to Tarrant Road. Controlled access installations, including two additional guard shacks, were also added at this time.

Davis-Martin-Powell continues to assist with further expansion of Polo’s loading dock area, as well as to inventory all their parking lots, make maintenance recommendations and provide renovation documents.

DMP is proud to have assisted Polo in the expansion to their current 1.10 million square-foot facilities in Piedmont Centre.
